I keep a folder on my computer desk top with this picture in it. Sometimes I look at it to remember how lucky I am. This hospital picture was January 12, 2012 when my son was 4 months old.
This is my son now, almost 7 months old. I am lucky. My family is lucky. My son is so very lucky. I keep that picture to remind myself.
Bits and pieces of the baby days of my fourth and last child and the only little boy in our household. Adam was born with a Congenital Heart Defect, he had open-heart surgery at 4 months and 11 days, came home after 4 days and has been gaining weight on breast milk ever since. To say he is a pleasure, a joy, a miracle, a wonder, my favorite boy in the whole world, ... all understatements!

Why must you take so many pictures?
I feel like every time Adam sees my blue camera he is wondering why I have to point that thing at him so often. But he is so cute, how can I not!
Six month check and a lot of shots.
Today was Adam's six month check, he also got all the six month shots, the last Synagis shot and part one of a flu shot, which I thought was strange since it's mid-March. He got two shots in each leg and one oral vaccine. Poor baby.
His weight is 14 pounds 10 ounces, which I am wondering if there was an error on the scale because that means from February 24th to March 13th he gained one pound and 4.5 ounces, that seems like a lot in less than three weeks. February 24th he was weighed on a digital scale and March 13th on a manual scale, the kind with the slides.
Anyway, he is still only nursing but his pediatrician seemed to think I should start solids before I "miss the window for him to learn how to eat solids" I like my pediatrician, but that sounds a little goofy to me.
Adam is sleeping right now and I want to go pick him up. He is such a doll.

Why I have not started solids yet.
You have to love a sentence that ends with the word YET, that cannot be good grammar.
Adam is my fourth child, and I breastfed each one of my children without formula for over two years each. My oldest who is now 15 breastfed for 4 years and 1 month, I weaned her. My second daughter breastfed for 2 years and 1 month and I reluctantly weaned her when I found out I was pregnant with my third child. (I miscarried twice while nursing my oldest so I don't try to do both, though I have heard some women can). My third child is the only one who weaned herself, she nursed for 2 years and 7 months.
I started various baby foods with each of them around 5 1/2 months. I did it differently with each of them. My first got plain yogurt as that was the norm for her dad's culture, my second got baby cereal, my third I started with veggies, yellows I think.
My oldest daughter was always in the high percentiles on the growth charts, same for my third daughter, but my second daughter was wee. She was 7 lb 4 oz at birth and she stayed right at the 50th percentile for height and weight until I started her on baby food. Once she was eating foods other than breast milk her gain slowed down. I still breastfed her before each feeding of baby food because breast milk is superior, but by the time she was a year and a half she was in the 5th percentile for weight.
Adam was six months old on march 1st, he is still breastfeeding on demand, which is about every 1 to 3 hours during the day and maybe every 2-4 at night, I don't keep track anymore.
After his heart surgery on January 12th he has gained over 2 pounds and all on breast milk. His thighs are so big now I can't get my hand around them!
Why am I holding off on starting solids? The big reason is I want 7 or 8 months of just breast milk in him before I add anything else, I feel he is about two months behind due to his heart problems and I feel he needs at least six months worth of milk in his body before I introduce foods. The other reason, babies aren't really supposed to have solids until they can sit unassisted and he is not doing that yet.
Mostly I am going by how I feel and I feel that at least another month of just nursing is the best thing.
I couldn't have a post without pictures, so here are a couple!
Chunky thighs, only a baby can get away with this look.

How to be supportive of a mom who is nursing in public.
Step 1. Smile at her.

It has been almost two months since Adam's open-heart surgery!
Parking lot again
I took my daughter to school today and nursed Adam before she went in, she had a 2-hour late start. We were talking about how easy it is to leave the house with a breast fed baby, I keep a couple diapers and some wipes in my purse and an extra outfit. No worries about how long we'll be out. Easy!

Boobs. My stance on these lactating wonders and other very random thoughts.
Even though I started this blog when Adam was born I did not share the address on either facebook or the boards I frequent. Why not? Shyness over showing my boobs is not the reason. The biggest reason is I have a lot of friends and acquaintances and relations who either aren't parents or did not breast feed and I did not want them to think I was weird or bragging or whatever.
So, why did I decide to share my blog? I'm not sure, maybe it was the first few pages I've read so far of Beyond the Sling by Mayim Bialik, who in my head I refer to as Amy Farrah Fowler, from the Big Bang Theory.
Maybe it's because I think my children have benefited greatly from being breastfed. Maybe it's to share my experience, or at least the cute pictures of my last baby.
I don't know, maybe it's just because people need to get over boobs, you either have them or you like them or both, they are boobs, nothing to be afraid of.
Anyway, so I'm reading the book and enjoying (so far) reading the parenting thoughts of a like-minded mom. Often times I've thought of writing some tips myself for the breastfeeding mom. I've had two articles published in New Beginnings, the magazine of the La Leche League.
Well, I've completely lost my train of thought, Adam is asleep on the couch and I have brushed and flossed and am ready for bed and getting antsy because I haven't held him in about 20 minutes.
This is the cover to the book I'm reading, though I'm reading it on my husband's kindle.

When he falls asleep like this it's hard to put him down.
Sometimes Adam falls asleep and he looks so happy and is all cuddled up and I just can't put him down. It's hard because I like my apartment to be tidy, but it is so nice holding a cuddly little sleeping baby. Then if it's the weekend my husband is all like, "Me, me me me me!" So I pass the baby to him, then I run around cleaning like a maniac until Adam wakes up and realizes he's not with mommy :)
Nursing to sleep
Adam doesn't always nurse until he falls asleep anymore, before his heart surgery he almost always fell asleep nursing, but these days he only does so if he's sleepy. Often times he nurses then talks to the boob for a while before trying to sit up.
This time he was tired and was rubbing both eyes while nursing.

So sleepy
Adam's surgery was almost two months ago now. March 12th it will be two months since he got his heart all fixed up!
He's a little behind on his milestones but I think that is to be expected because of his heart's condition. He is a happy and healthy and getting chubby, wonderful boy!
