Why I have not started solids yet.

You have to love a sentence that ends with the word YET, that cannot be good grammar.

Adam is my fourth child, and I breastfed each one of my children without formula for over two years each. My oldest who is now 15 breastfed for 4 years and 1 month, I weaned her. My second daughter breastfed for 2 years and 1 month and I reluctantly weaned her when I found out I was pregnant with my third child. (I miscarried twice while nursing my oldest so I don't try to do both, though I have heard some women can). My third child is the only one who weaned herself, she nursed for 2 years and 7 months.

I started various baby foods with each of them around 5 1/2 months. I did it differently with each of them. My first got plain yogurt as that was the norm for her dad's culture, my second got baby cereal, my third I started with veggies, yellows I think.

My oldest daughter was always in the high percentiles on the growth charts, same for my third daughter, but my second daughter was wee. She was 7 lb 4 oz at birth and she stayed right at the 50th percentile for height and weight until I started her on baby food. Once she was eating foods other than breast milk her gain slowed down. I still breastfed her before each feeding of baby food because breast milk is superior, but by the time she was a year and a half she was in the 5th percentile for weight.

Adam was six months old on march 1st, he is still breastfeeding on demand, which is about every 1 to 3 hours during the day and maybe every 2-4 at night, I don't keep track anymore.

After his heart surgery on January 12th he has gained over 2 pounds and all on breast milk. His thighs are so big now I can't get my hand around them!

Why am I holding off on starting solids? The big reason is I want 7 or 8 months of just breast milk in him before I add anything else, I feel he is about two months behind due to his heart problems and I feel he needs at least six months worth of milk in his body before I introduce foods. The other reason, babies aren't really supposed to have solids until they can sit unassisted and he is not doing that yet.

Mostly I am going by how I feel and I feel that at least another month of just nursing is the best thing.

I couldn't have a post without pictures, so here are a couple!

Chunky thighs, only a baby can get away with this look.

The two of us
